What is the Holy Quran?
The word ‘Quran’ means to read or recite. The first five of its verses were revealed through Angel Jibrail to the Prophet (PBUH) in the Hira Cave. This transpired in the month ofRamadan when the Prophet (PBUH) was forty years old. It ultimately took twenty-three years for all 114 chapters of theHoly Book to be revealed.
The Quran is a Timeless Miracle, gifted by the Almighty to all mankind in Arabic. “The truth is from your Lord, so on no account be among the doubters.” (Quran 2:147).It is God’s literal speech that is impossible to alter. The word of Allah is the last and final revelation sent to the last and final Prophet, Muhammed (PBUH).
The Holy Bookhas been memorized by Muslims in every day and age. Even today it is committed to memory, from cover to cover, by millions of Muslims across the globe. “And We have certainly made the Qur’an easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?” (Quran54:17)
Why was the Quran Revealed in Twenty-Three Years?
“And (it is) a Quran which We have divided into parts, in order that you might recite it to men at intervals. And We have revealed it by stages.” (Quran 17:106)
Pre-Islamic Arabian society was at its lowest before the advent of Islam. The pagan Arabs loved to shed blood and conflicts would be passed on from one generation to the next. Women were treated like cattle and could be bought and sold. A society so depraved, in which little girls would be buried alive. The gravest sin, that this society was guilty of, was their love of idol-worship.
Hence, thisgradual revealing of Quranic verses was critical in bringing forth enduring reforms. Verses, when revealed at intervals, were easier for the companions to memorize, internalize and act upon. The simultaneous nature of revelation is what conquered the most rebellious of hearts and minds. This is why Allah’s wordprovides a blueprint for any society looking for a change. The revolutionary impact of its teachings is almost inevitable, should they be embraced.
How was the Quran Put Together?
“It is We Who have sent down the remembrance (i.e. the Quran) and surely, We will guard it from corruption.” (Quran 15:9)
Whenever the Prophet (PBUH) received revelation, he would commit it to memory. His companions did the same. They would also writethe verses down on stone tablets, date palm leaves, and camel bones.
It was only during the reign of the first Righteous Caliph, Abu Bakr (r.a.) that it was compiled in written form. Zaid ibn Thabit (r.a.) was assigned to collect its verses and write them down. This written version was finalized when Uthman (r.a.) was Caliph, and it remains in that form, today.
The Quran Revealed Man’s True Purpose in Life
“And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.” (Quran51:56)
This verse informs mankind of its sole purpose for being created. To fulfill the purpose in question, belief in One God is mandatory. Without belief in Allah SWT man’s purpose will forever remain unfulfilled. A believer’s purpose is to worship Allah, which means submitting to the guidance contained in the Holy Book and Sunnah.
Through this verse, the most befitting answer to the original question is derived. What is the Holy Quran? Well, it is a manual for human existence. It shows us how to submit our will to the Creator by fulfilling His rights and those of His creation, defined in the Holy Book. Italso teaches man how to secure eternal happiness for himself in the Afterlife.
